NEW INDIA FOUNDATION TITLES THEIR NON-FICTION BOOK PRIZE; KAMALADEVI CHATTOPADHYAY NIF BOOK PRIZE
Building on their announcement last month of an annual Book Prize for non-fiction about any aspect of modern/ contemporary India, the Trustees of New India Foundation is pleased to announce a title for this prize – THE “Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize”. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay worked across many fields – the freedom struggle, theatre, handicrafts, refugee rehabilitation, and more. She was a pioneer in each of these fields, as well as a true patriot who was also a great internationalist. In naming our Book Prize after her, the NIF pays tribute to a great Indian whose vision and example continues to inspire.
The NIF uniquely matches public-spirited philanthropy with ground-breaking and relevant scholarship. Adding to its fellowships to scholars and writers working on different aspects of the history of independent India, the “Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize” with a grant of Rs.15 lacs, will be given every year to the best non-fiction book about modern/contemporary India. The prize builds on the New India Foundation mission of sponsoring high-quality research on aspects of Independent India and will seek to recognize an outstanding work of non-fiction published each year.
The criteria for the prize are: the book should be a non-fiction work across genres on any aspect of modern/contemporary India published in the calendar year 2017. This prize is open to all authors independent of their nationality. NIF fellows will not be eligible to be nominated for this prize.
The Jury for the NIF Prize will be the same as that which awards the NIF Fellowships. The link to nominate books (open to all publishers, authors, and individuals) will close by June 1st, 2018. Publishers can nominate no more than five books published by them in the year 2017. NIF proposes to announce the winner at the Bangalore Literary Festival in October 2018.
