Nachiket Kelkar
Nachiket Kelkar studies river dolphins, fisheries, and hydroclimatic and social change in the Gangetic plains of India. He is an NIF fellow, and is working on his book on Bihar's floodplain ecology and society, based on his long-term research in the region. He heads the Riverine Ecosystems And Livelihoods programme at the Wildlife Conservation Trust, India, and is a Member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group.
Mahananda: Marginal River
The few times that the Mahananda river is in the news are ill-fated times for people. The news is about people suffering from its severe flooding in some years, as it breaches embankments and erodes fields, biting off chunks of silt as it snakes down the plains. And then it remains missing from the picture in times of fair weather.
