The NIF Book Fellowship: Support for Fellows
1) Financial Support
The Fellowship provides Fellows with a monthly stipend of ₹1,00,000 for the duration of the 12-month fellowship period. In addition to the monthly stipend, Fellows receive ₹3,00,000 upon signing their manuscript and a further ₹3,00,000 upon publication of their book.
2) Editorial Support
NIF's in-house editor, Rivka Israel, works closely with every Fellow, providing editorial intervention at both the sentence and argument level. This rigorous editorial process ensures that a near-complete manuscript — requiring minimal additional intervention — is delivered to the publisher.
To sustain the momentum of each Fellow's work, NIF requires monthly verbal progress reports as well as written quarterly reports. These structured check-ins allow NIF to monitor progress while helping Fellows maintain focus and productivity throughout the fellowship period.
3) Publishing and Legal Support
Over two decades, NIF has cultivated a robust network of literary agents and publishing houses, giving Fellows direct access to both independent presses and leading trade publishers — an advantage that would otherwise require extensive networking, particularly for debut writers. While Fellows retain complete autonomy over their choice of publisher, NIF facilitates introductions and eases access to the publishing ecosystem.
To further support Fellows in navigating the publishing world, NIF organises online workshops covering the legalities of contracts and related matters, enabling Fellows to make well-informed decisions when entering into agreements with publishers.
Additionally, NIF provides a Publisher's Subsidy of ₹1,00,000 directly to publishers to ensure that NIF books are effectively marketed.
4) Mentorship
·Fellows have access to mentorship from members of NIF's Governing Board as well as its community of over 70 published Fellows, offering guidance drawn from a wide range of scholarly and professional experience.
5) Community and Peer Support
·A defining feature of the NIF Fellowship is its vibrant community. Once every two years, all published and current Fellows gather in Bengaluru for the NIF Retreat — a weekend forum for Fellows to share their work, address challenges in their writing, and draw inspiration from one another.
Beyond the Retreat, NIF fosters an ongoing sense of connection by hosting dinners across Indian cities, providing Fellows with informal settings to come together and discuss their respective journeys.
